Happy Turkey Day

Yes, I know I'm a few days late. Thanksgiving was two days ago. I've been out of town for the holidays.

This is a wild Turkey in Denton, TX . It hangs out at my fiance's house.

We all have a lot to be thankful for. Think about the simple things you have that others do not. running clean water, a bed, a computer, internet access, a phone, a jacket, a family to share thanksgiving with. etc.

First 5D mark II samples, first USA arrival.

I got a chance to play with one yesterday in Arlington, Texas. This is one of the first in the US to come in. My name is on the list, but not high enough to take one home yet. I did get some sample images however.

The first thing I did was test out a high ISO shot. Of course.
ISO 6400, this was the highest it would go without turning expansion on.

full image - 1/500 - f/4.5 - ISO6400

1:1 - 1/500 - f/4.5 - ISO6400

Then I went into the menu to turn on ISO expansion.
Time to test out the famous 25600 ISO.

Movie Time.
I put on Av mode, aperture priority. I wanted to see how it handled adjusting exposure, it was quite violent. Later in the video I tested out the auto focus button. I was impressed at the speed, but I had low expectations. It was a lot faster than the D90.

Photo Club Studio Day

Joe has proven that blog posts about the UNT photo club events has been successful in spreading the word and even gaining members who do not go to UNT.

This month, along with numerous other events, we had a "studio day", where with what we had, I was able to teach just a little about lighting, although it turned from a tutorial to goofing around pretty quickly. That's just us. A goofy group.

shown is Matt Fagan with his broom and Nikon. We mostly shot pictures of each other.

however, some of the girls from the UNT dance team showed up for some photos. Shown to the left is UNT dancer, Holly. To the right is one of our most photogenic photo club members, Kayla with her Canon. We had a Nikon-Canon battle going on, ...one of you guys should sponsor us.

Here's some of the group. In the center is the president Brad, him and I are also the co-founders of the club. Now that I think of it, Brad is the most photogenic of the group. I'll spare my blog readers a gasp for air by not posting any pictures of him. His poses are lethal.

Paden Seniors

Cars and football uniforms can be pretty cliche for senior pictures, but client's request and I think we were able to pull if off. Paden's mom is a return client, so she had faith in me I suppose.

I got a little creative with the football uniform shots. I had him jump on the trampoline and I took pictures as if he was making insane dives, catches etc. It was a lot of fun. Below is a picture of the set-up.

The dancers are back

This time modeling for promotional pictures for Planet Tan, their big sponsor.

For you strobists who want to know. On this shot, I had a shoot-through umbrella 430EX II at 1/4th power on a stand actually just in front of me (to prevent my shadow) and raised to 6 feet + the mounts (the girls were about 5'7 I would guess). Then a strobe on the ground behind them shooting upward also at 1.4th to light the background and give that glow look.

This is Paige, a great dancer and a very respectful person. She's credited the most toward my ticket in to my role as the UNT dance team photographer. She's shown in a Versa. whatever that is.

I thought about turning on the tanner for a cool lighting effect, but then decided against it. I'll avoid cancer if I can. Just kidding ...I couldn't resist. I actually gelled the light inside the bed a slight orange to give it that warm "tan-like" glow, when those lights would probably actually give off a greenish tint. The warm color felt more right to me, and in all honestly, only professional photographers would probably pay attention to potential inconsistent color temperature.

Good shoot all in all.
More of the team team coming soon. yep. still more!

Connor Baby

the classic baby shot ^

This photo was inspired by a photo Jason Witten's baby. Jason plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

Connor and his Sister

They wanted black and white, so that's what I did. I'm a big color fan personally, so here's just one on the blog for all the color lovers like myself :)

Rachel is married!

Rachel is like a sister to me. Her brother chopper was my best friend from early childhood and still. Rachel and I have been through a lot, truth or dare in elementary school, protecting her the princess as a pirate every halloween. Her spaghetti dinners in college, etc. Jonathan, her husband is a a great guy too. I'm so happy to see them married, so this post is just a tribute, not a photoshoot.

Here is Rachel and her dad, ST on the rehearsal day. ST and his wife Ellen (who i don't have any pictures of from the day, sorry!) are also huge parts of my life and childhood.

Here's Jonathan, her new husband. He's a great guy.

I stayed out of the photographer's way all night, (which you should always do), but took this when the guys were tucked away and Rachel was getting her photos taken. This is Chopper, Rachel's brother and my best friend growing up.

Texas Stadium - major progress

The new Texas Stadium will be the home of the Dallas Cowboys. I made a post a while back (link in the jump) with pictures of the stadium progress. Frequently, aerial photography job give me the opportunity to fly over the new stadium and see if from a very unique perspective.

The size of the structure is so massive, the pictures just don't do it justice, so I wanted to include a shot that gave a little perspective. See the two tiny workers wearing orange? Now take the area shown in this picture, and look at it in the photo above... yeah. The size of the people aren't even a pixel.

Vote today

If you're a registered US voter, and have not already, make sure to vote today.
My advise to you is to look down the ballot past the president.
Choose a few issues important to you and America.

For me, it was:
alternative energy investment and support
not ignoring the environment
improvements in a slumping education
decrease dependency on foreign oil
a balanced budget, avoiding more debt
answers to the social security problem

As you can imagine my ballot was all split up, between parties. I don't believe in partisanship. It only took a a few minutes on the internet, and I think the future of our nation and generations to come is worth spending a few minutes on the internet researching.

PS. something big is coming in a future post!!

Pumkin patch

I probably should've posted before halloween, but I'm only 1 day late.

This is griffin's first experience with pumpkins. Griffin is my nephew for those who don't know.

The whole family came out actually, even nana and papa. But by the time Connor and Jessalyn (other nephew and niece) got there, the lighting wasn't so great. Sarah posted a picture in her blog of all with all the kids. you can see that on her blog.
